Becoming an editor

Being an editor is a dream job for many, in particular for students of the humanities. However, as personal experience has taught us, gaining entry to the profession is not always easy. Many become editors by circuitous routes; perhaps they have studied natural sciences and now work as editors in their field of expertise. One key factor is being interested not just in language, but in many subjects. After all, editors have to familiarise themselves with the material for each new project, and editing an annual report is much different from editing a novel. Many graduates just embarking on their career think only of the novel, yet there are far more exciting projects, ranging from non-fiction books or economic reports to advertising texts. Simply knowing the ins and outs of the language is not enough for success here. Another important aspect is collaborating closely with clients, because editors need to know what clients want. This is the difference to proofreading, in which texts are revised ‘only’ in keeping with the rules of spelling and grammar while the style is left untouched.
