What we do

Did you know that our professionals can taste words?

synaesthetes taste words

In order to completely comprehend a text, you have to do more than ‘just’ read it. During their university coursework, copywriters, editors and translators become familiar with a number of different approaches to working with words. However, some people don’t need a special degree to understand a text with all their senses. In fact, they can even taste words and smell letters. These unique individuals are known as synaesthetes; Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was one of them. In synaesthetes, when one sense is triggered, the person simultaneously experiences perceptions tied to other senses. This expanded perception is probably due to heightened neural activity in the network of brain regions. Precisely how this phenomenon occurs has not yet been fully explained, however.
Synaesthetes like Goethe or Liszt additionally seemed to experience increased productivity and creativity as a result of their enhanced perception. We haven’t yet investigated whether there are any synaesthetes among our professionals here at Textklinik, but when we work on your texts, we delve into them so deeply that we feel like we are able to smell the word ‘rain’ and taste the word ‘strawberries’. Only when you use all of your senses to understand what a word means can you use that word in a way that does it justice.
